Introduction to Personalized Digital Assistants (PDAs)

For years people in the business world have been toting their palmtop computer organizers, keeping track of their appointments, business contacts, and to do lists. These are rudimentary tasks for personalized digital assistants (PDAs). PDAs are expanding into the medical market with leaps and bounds. PDAs are capable of keeping track of patients, providing common reference texts, performing medical calculations, and providing quick drug references. It is now possible to write patients prescriptions and have them sent electronically to the front of the office where they are printed out. While still in their experimental stages, there are even patient tracking and charting programs. New programs are available for PDAs everyday. It is our hope that this section will help provide the busy nurse practitioner important information in this changing technology.
